How we check our facts
Where the facts come from
- State facts (whether casinos are legal, the gambling age, the list of licensed venues) come from primary sources: the state regulator, state law, the National Indian Gaming Commission or a tribal gaming authority.
- Venue facts (table games, poker room, hotel, restaurants, parking) come from the venue's own website or the regulator.
How we verify
- Every fact is stored with its source and the date we read it. The sources are listed at the bottom of each page.
- A second check re-reads the source for every required fact (legal status, gambling age, venue list, venue type, games, poker, hotel).
- If we can't confirm a fact, we leave it out. We never estimate.
Venue types
- Casino: a state-licensed casino with slots, table games or both.
- Tribal casino: a tribal casino with Class III (full casino) games.
- Tribal (Class II): a tribal venue with bingo-based machines only.
- Racino: a racetrack with slot machines or video lottery terminals.
- Card room: poker and player-banked card games.
- Historical racing: a parlor with historical horse racing machines.
We don't list cruise ships, truck stops, bars with slot machines or online casinos.
Maps and photos
- State outlines come from the US Census Bureau's cartographic boundaries, via the public-domain us-atlas files.
- Venue locations come from OpenStreetMap via Nominatim (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL). We check each pin by eye. A hollow pin means we only know the town, so the pin sits at the town centre.
- We only show photos taken at night or dusk. Credits are on the photo credits page.
Player-reported minimums
Players can report the table minimum they saw. A report goes live only when a second, independent player reports the same game at the same venue within $5 and within 7 days. Player reports are labelled as such and kept apart from facts we've verified.
